A study by researchers at University College Cork reveals that quitting coffee for two weeks can lower stress and impulsivity, while switching to decaf may specifically enhance sleep and memory through beneficial plant compounds.
Giving up coffee for just 14 days can lead to significant reductions in impulsivity and emotional reactivity, according to a new study from University College Cork. Researchers tracked 62 healthy adults to monitor the physiological and behavioral shifts that occur during a two-week withdrawal period. The findings, published in *Nature Communications*, suggest that regular coffee drinkers often experience higher levels of stress and reactive behavior compared to non-drinkers, but these traits normalize quickly once the habit is paused.
The study also highlighted the distinct role of decaffeinated coffee in cognitive health. When participants reintroduced coffee after the initial detox, those assigned to decaf showed marked improvements in sleep quality, physical activity levels, and memory test scores. Scientists believe these benefits may stem from phenolic acids—naturally occurring plant antioxidants found in the coffee bean—rather than the caffeine itself, which was more closely associated with a temporary reduction in psychological distress and anxiety.
Beyond mood and memory, the researchers discovered that coffee consumption creates a unique “signature” within the gut microbiome. After two weeks of abstinence, the bacterial patterns in regular drinkers began to shift back toward the levels seen in non-drinkers. While the study also noted that coffee appears to have anti-inflammatory properties, lowering markers like C-reactive protein, experts cautioned that the trial was relatively small and requires further large-scale research to confirm long-term health implications.
