King Charles heads to Washington to repair tense U.S.-U.K relationship

President Trump and King Charles III are moving forward with a Monday state visit intended to reinforce historic ties despite a recent security crisis in Washington and deep diplomatic divisions over trade and the war in Iran.

President Trump is set to host King Charles III and Queen Camilla for a high-stakes state visit at the White House this Monday, a meeting that proceeds as planned despite a weekend assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and significant geopolitical friction. While Buckingham Palace confirmed the King is “greatly relieved” the President was unharmed and is “looking forward to the visit,” the summit is clouded by the unpopular U.S. war in Iran and Trump’s sharp critiques of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whom he compared unfavorably to Winston Churchill.

Starmer has defended the trip as “an important reminder of the long-standing bonds” that are “greater than anyone who occupies any particular office at any particular time,” even as the leaders face unresolved disputes over U.K. digital taxes and potential “huge tariffs.” Despite these policy clashes and calls from some British politicians to cancel the trip, Trump has maintained a warm personal regard for the monarch, calling him “fantastic” and a “brave man” who “would absolutely be a positive for improving relations.”
