President Trump has rejected a new Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the naval blockade, opting to continue military pressure until a comprehensive nuclear agreement is reached.
An Iranian official revealed Saturday that Tehran has formally proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the U.S. blockade, while deferring nuclear talks. Despite the potential to ease the global energy crisis, President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the terms while visiting his Doral golf resort.
“Do we want to go and just blast the hell out of them and finish them forever? Or do we want to try and make a deal?” Trump asked, though he emphasized he is in “no hurry” to settle. Meanwhile, the Iranian official noted, “Under this framework, negotiations over the more complicated nuclear issue have been moved to the final stage to create a more conducive atmosphere.”
With oil supplies choked and midterms looming, pressure is mounting to resolve the conflict that began in February.
