A French woman and an American passenger tested positive for hantavirus after being evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius, prompting quarantines and monitoring in several countries.
A French woman evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius tested positive for hantavirus and her condition worsened overnight, French Health Minister Stephanie Rist said Monday.
The woman was among five French passengers repatriated to Paris on Sunday after developing symptoms during the flight. U.S. officials also confirmed one American passenger tested positive after arriving in Nebraska, while another showed mild symptoms.
Passengers were evacuated from the ship in Tenerife by personnel wearing full protective gear. More than 140 passengers from over 20 countries were being monitored or quarantined after three deaths linked to the outbreak.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “This is not another COVID. And the risk to the public is low. So they shouldn’t be scared, and they shouldn’t panic.”
Health officials said the Andes strain involved may rarely spread between people.
