Spain has proposed creating an EU army and stronger mutual defence system as concerns grow over US commitment to Nato under Donald Trump.
Spain has called for the creation of a European Union army to reduce reliance on Nato amid growing tensions with the United States. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said Europe could no longer depend entirely on the US-led alliance for security guarantees.
“We cannot be waking up every morning wondering what the US will do next… our citizens deserve better,” Albares told Politico.
He said Europe must become “free of dependence” and capable of resisting “tariffs or the use of military threat.”
The remarks come as US President Donald Trump pressures Spain over its refusal to raise defence spending to five per cent of GDP. Trump has also threatened troop withdrawals and possible Nato suspension.
Albares proposed an EU equivalent of Nato’s Article 5 mutual defence clause, insisting Europe must strengthen deterrence and military independence.
