Dua Lipa sues Samsung for $15 million over unauthorised use of her image on TV packaging

Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for at least $15 million, alleging the South Korean tech giant used her image on television packaging across the US without her consent, creating a false impression she had endorsed the brand.

British pop star Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for at least $15 million after the South Korean technology company allegedly used her image without authorisation on cardboard packaging for television sets sold across the United States, according to CNN.

Legal papers filed Friday in the United States District Court Central District of California allege Samsung used a photograph of the 30-year-old singer on TV boxes, falsely suggesting she had endorsed the brand.

The filing states Lipa “did not enter into an agreement with Samsung” but that the packaging allowed the company to “benefit by capitalising on the implied (false) association with Ms. Lipa as a sponsor of Samsung’s mass-marketed television sets.”

Lipa is seeking damages for copyright infringement, trademark infringement and violation of her right of publicity, alleging Samsung refused to comply with “repeated demands that it cease and desist” from using her image.

A Samsung spokesperson told CNN: “Given the ongoing legal proceedings, we’re not in a position to comment at this time.”
