Scottish military instructor convicted of spying for Russia in Ukraine

A Scottish military instructor from Dunfermline who was recruited by Russia’s FSB to spy on Ukrainian forces has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison by a Ukrainian court.

According to the BBC, a Scottish man who travelled to Ukraine as a military instructor but later became a Russian spy has been jailed for eight-and-a-half years following a plea deal with Ukrainian prosecutors.

Ross David Cutmore, from Dunfermline in Fife, arrived in Ukraine in January 2024 but abandoned his instructor role in September that year, subsequently seeking income through pro-Kremlin online communities where he was recruited by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).

Cutmore passed location coordinates of Ukrainian forces, photographs of training areas and information about military personnel to his handlers, receiving $6,000 for one assignment alone.

Ukrainian authorities also accused him of planning terrorist attacks and illegally possessing a Russian-supplied pistol.

He was detained by Ukrainian counterintelligence in October 2024 and admitted his guilt at the Kyiv District Court in Odesa on 30 April.
