Senators to suspend their pay during government shutdowns

The Senate passed a resolution to withhold senators’ salaries during federal funding lapses to align their financial interests with unpaid federal workers.

In a rare display of bipartisanship, the Senate unanimously adopted a resolution Thursday to withhold senators’ pay during any future federal government shutdowns. According to CBS News, the measure follows two record-breaking funding lapses that totaled over 100 days of closures in the past year.

Led by GOP Senator John Kennedy, the resolution directs the Senate secretary to freeze payments until appropriations are restored. Kennedy described the move as a “shared sacrifice,” noting that federal employees are often forced to go without pay during political impasses.

“We ought to hide our heads in a bag,” Kennedy stated, citing the recent 76-day DHS shutdown. “It’s got to stop.” Due to the 27th Amendment, the rule takes effect after the November election. Kennedy added, “it won’t stop all shutdowns, but maybe this will help.”
