A record 274 climbers reached the summit of Mount Everest from the south side in a single day, surpassing the previous record by nearly 50 climbers amid favourable weather conditions.
A new record has been set on Mount Everest after 274 climbers scaled the world’s highest peak from its south side in a single day, a Nepali hiking official confirmed.
The figure surpasses the previous south-side record of 223 set on May 22, 2019. Rishi Bhandari, secretary general of the Expedition Operators Association of Nepal, credited good weather conditions and the large number of climbers awaiting their ascent of the 8,848-metre peak.
The record comes after a disrupted climbing season, during which glacial ice blocked the route and kept hundreds of climbers stranded at Base Camp for weeks. The route was eventually cleared on May 13.
Nepal issued nearly 500 permits this year, with strong winds forecast later in the week threatening to close the narrow summit window.
