According to Anadolu Agency, Hamas has confirmed the killing of Mohammed Awda, a senior commander in its Al-Qassam Brigades, after an Israeli airstrike hit a residential building in Gaza City on Tuesday evening. The group said Awda was killed alongside his wife and two sons, describing him as part of the first generation of its armed resistance leadership.
Israeli authorities, however, claimed earlier that Awda had recently been selected as the new head of Hamas’ armed wing and said he was targeted in a northern Gaza strike. Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, also confirmed the operation. The reports come amid intensified bombardments in densely populated areas of Gaza City, just ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, further escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict.
