An American surgeon who contracted Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been discharged from a Berlin hospital after making a full recovery.
As The PUNCH reports, the 39-year-old doctor spent 17 days receiving treatment at Charite Hospital, where he was given experimental therapies and intensive care. The surgeon, identified as Dr Peter Stafford, caught the virus after operating on an Ebola patient before the outbreak was officially declared in eastern Congo.
Hospital officials said Stafford’s viral load dropped significantly during treatment, with no trace of the virus detected since May 30. His wife and children, who were quarantined as high-risk contacts, were also cleared and discharged.
The latest Ebola outbreak has infected 471 people and killed 84, according to the World Health Organisation.
