Alberta separatist group has enough signatures to trigger referendum on leaving Canada…

Alberta separatists have submitted enough signatures to trigger a potential independence referendum, though legal and political obstacles remain.

A separatist group in Alberta says it has submitted nearly 302,000 signatures to trigger a referendum on leaving Canada, surpassing the required 178,000. The move could place the issue on a provincial ballot as early as October.

Group leader Mitch Sylvestre described the development as historic, saying, “This day is historic in Alberta history… we’ve gotten by Round 3 and now we’re in the Stanley Cup final.” Supporters gathered in Edmonton, chanting and waving flags as the petition was delivered.

However, Premier Danielle Smith does not support separation, while legal challenges from Indigenous groups could delay or block the process. Experts also doubt success, citing low public support.
