Britain risks losing NATO leadership without nuclear upgrade — Report

A US defence expert-backed report warns Britain must expand its nuclear arsenal or risk weakening its leadership role in NATO amid rising global security threats.

Britain has been warned it risks losing its influence within NATO unless it expands its nuclear weapons capability, according to a report supported by a former adviser to US President George W Bush.

Franklin Miller, a former US nuclear policy adviser, said the UK must strengthen its deterrent in response to growing threats from Russia and China, arguing that Western powers have fallen behind in nuclear strategy thinking.

A Policy Exchange report said Britain’s Trident system remains credible but may not be sufficient to sustain NATO leadership, especially amid uncertainty over US commitment to the alliance.

Mr Miller warned there had been an “intellectual holiday” in Western nuclear thinking since the Cold War and stressed that “much more needs to be done” to maintain deterrence credibility.
