Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned that Alberta’s growing independence movement could trigger years of regret, drawing parallels with Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.
According to CNBC, Carney described the push for Alberta’s separation from Canada as “a very dangerous bluff,” arguing that voters are often told such moves are risk-free when the consequences can be far-reaching.
The comments come ahead of a planned referendum in Alberta later this year. Carney, who led the Bank of England during the Brexit vote, said Britain is still dealing with the fallout a decade later.
Supporters of Alberta’s separatist movement say the province has long been overlooked by federal policymakers.
