Rep. Josh Gottheimer publicly distanced the Democratic Party from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, saying he does not consider the democratic socialist a Democrat.
According to Fox News, Gottheimer made the remarks during an interview on the network’s “America’s Newsroom,” accusing socialists of attempting to reshape the party’s identity. He argued the socialist movement’s priorities differ from the Democratic Party’s traditional values.
Gottheimer also criticized Mamdani’s positions on Israel and other foreign policy issues, describing them as inconsistent with mainstream Democratic views.
The remarks underscore growing ideological divisions within the Democratic Party as leaders continue debating the influence of progressive and democratic socialist figures ahead of future elections.
