EU sanctions Israeli settlers, broadens measures against Hamas Politburo members

The European Union is tightening the screws on both sides of the conflict. According to Reuters, the EU on Thursday imposed sanctions on four entities and three individuals accused of abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank, including what it described as extremist Israeli settlers and groups that support them.

In a separate move, the bloc also expanded its sanctions regime against Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The new measures now cover members of Hamas’ Political Bureau, or Politburo, who the EU says promote, defend, or justify acts of violence.

The twin actions underscore Brussels’ effort to address escalating tensions in the region by targeting both settler violence in the West Bank and leaders linked to militant activities.
