A Florida man has sued OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT repeatedly misdiagnosed his symptoms and discouraged him from seeking medical help before he suffered a near-fatal pulmonary embolism.

A Florida pastor says ChatGPT nearly cost him his life. Scott Winters, 55, has sued OpenAI and Sam Altman, alleging the chatbot repeatedly misdiagnosed his symptoms and discouraged him from seeking hospital care, according to the BBC.
The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco on July 21, claims ChatGPT invoked Winters’ Christian faith to reassure him, telling him “God is still holding your body together.” He later suffered a massive pulmonary embolism linked to prolonged immobility.
OpenAI’s Drew Pusateri said ChatGPT “is not a doctor and should never be used as a substitute for medical care.” Winters is seeking damages and safeguards for other users.
