Former CDC Chief warns Ebola outbreak could become second largest ever

Former CDC Director Robert Redfield is sounding the alarm over the rapidly growing Ebola outbreak in Central Africa, warning that it could evolve into a major international health crisis.

According to The Hill, Redfield said he believes the outbreak could spread beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda into neighbouring countries, including Tanzania, South Sudan and Rwanda. He described the situation as a potentially “very significant pandemic,” citing the speed at which cases have risen and concerns that the outbreak was not detected early enough.

Health authorities are already scrambling to contain the spread, with the World Health Organization classifying the outbreak as a global health emergency and warning that response efforts are struggling to keep pace with new infections.

The Hill reports that officials remain on high alert.
