Former New Hampshire state representative Stacie Laughton is heading to federal prison for 33 years after being convicted of sexually exploiting children. NH Journal reported the sentencing, with the charges originally announced by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Laughton historically known as the first openly transgender person elected to the New Hampshire Legislature pleaded guilty to federal charges tied to a child exploitation investigation involving a Massachusetts daycare. Prosecutors said Laughton received and encouraged the production of sexually explicit images of young children, sent by former partner Lindsay Groves, a daycare employee.

Court documents revealed thousands of text messages discussing the abuse. Beyond the prison term, Laughton will also face a lengthy period of supervised release upon completion of the sentence.
