The DOJ is investigating whether Harvard broke civil rights law by running financial aid programs — funded by Chinese sources — that allegedly favor foreign students over Americans.
Harvard’s China Money Problem
Harvard’s foreign funding just landed it in federal crosshairs. The Justice Department announced July 20 it’s investigating whether the university violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by excluding American students from financial aid programs bankrolled by China-based donors, according to Zerohedges.
The numbers are striking: Harvard disclosed nearly $4.5 billion in foreign funding, with $630 million — its largest single source — traced to China. The DOJ says some of that money came with strings attached: aid programs favoring students from specific countries.
“Schools cannot take federal dollars and then… give financial aid that deliberately excludes American citizens,” said DOJ civil rights chief Harmeet Dhillon. Harvard says it’s reviewing the notice and denies unlawful discrimination.
