Iran has begun a week-long state funeral for late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with thousands of mourners gathering in Tehran to pay their final respects.

According to Daily Post, Khamenei, who led Iran for 37 years, was killed during Israeli-US air strikes on February 28. His body was placed in state at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla Grand Mosque, where mourners, government officials, clerics and foreign dignitaries attended prayers and memorial ceremonies.

The coffins of several family members killed in the same attack were displayed alongside his.

Funeral events will continue through the week, with ceremonies planned in Qom, Najaf and Karbala before his burial in Mashhad on Thursday. Authorities have tightened security across Tehran and expanded transport and accommodation arrangements for expected mourners.
