Ireland expands work permit scheme to address labour shortages

Ireland has expanded its employment permit system in a major policy shift aimed at tackling ongoing labour shortages across critical sectors.

According to Tribune Online, the government introduced 32 reforms following a review of occupation lists, making it easier for foreign workers to fill gaps in construction, healthcare, transport, and agri-food industries. The changes include adding six roles to the Critical Skills list, opening nine occupations to General Employment Permits without quotas, and expanding access for several construction-related jobs.

Officials say the move will improve workforce flexibility while still protecting local employment standards. Minister Peter Burke noted the reforms take immediate effect and are designed to strengthen productivity and service delivery. The policy also adjusts existing workforce balance rules to ensure essential services are not disrupted while addressing persistent skill shortages nationwide.
