Iran has announced that former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be buried on July 9, more than four months after he was killed in Israeli and U.S. airstrikes.
According to Vanguard, citing Iranian state television, the burial will take place in Khamenei’s hometown of Mashhad after a series of funeral ceremonies beginning in Tehran on July 4 and continuing in the holy city of Qom on July 7.
The funeral was initially planned for March but was postponed due to the war. The July 4 start date of the national mourning ceremonies also coincides with the United States’ 250th Independence Day celebrations.
Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded him in March, has largely stayed out of public view since taking over leadership.
