US lawmakers are questioning Pentagon assurances over America’s weapons stockpiles and Iran’s remaining missile capabilities as the conflict enters its eleventh week.
Members of the US Congress have raised fresh concerns over America’s weapons stockpiles and Iran’s military strength despite assurances from Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Speaking before lawmakers, Hegseth dismissed fears of depleted munitions, saying, “We know exactly what we have. We have plenty of what we need.”
However, Democratic senators remained unconvinced. Senator Jeanne Shaheen replied “No” when asked if she trusted the Pentagon’s assessment, while Senator Richard Blumenthal described Hegseth’s claims as “absolutely ludicrous.”
Intelligence assessments reportedly indicate Iran still retains about 70 percent of its missile stockpile and mobile launchers.
Senator Mark Kelly warned the US had expended “a lot of munitions” during the conflict.
The Pentagon is seeking billions of dollars to replenish missile supplies as the Iran war settles into a fragile ceasefire after eleven weeks of fighting.
