Mamdani faces backlash from New Yorkers over 78-degree AC advice amid severe heat wave

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has drawn criticism after urging residents to set their air conditioners to 78 degrees during a severe heat wave to help ease pressure on the city’s power grid.

AC Advice Backlash

Zohran Mamdani has come under fire after asking New Yorkers to set air conditioners to 78 degrees as a powerful heat wave grips the city, according to the New York Post.

Mamdani urged residents to cut electricity use by adjusting thermostats, turning off unused electronics and unplugging devices as temperatures threaten to hit 100 degrees for the first time since 2012. The recommendation sparked backlash on social media, with critics arguing the suggested temperature was too high during extreme heat.

Mamdani said city buildings would follow the same guideline. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends thermostat settings between 75 and 78 degrees during summer.
