Italian PM Giorgia Meloni has publicly rebuffed Donald Trump’s criticism, insisting her popularity rests on defending Italy’s interests, not her ties to him.
Giorgia Meloni isn’t backing down. The Italian PM hit back hard at Donald Trump, calling his repeated jabs “senseless” and “unprovoked.”
According to comments shared online by journalist Mario Nawfal, Meloni said her popularity has nothing to do with being Trump’s friend — it’s about defending Italy’s interests, plain and simple.
She also drew a clear line on US military bases in Italy, stressing that long-standing agreements govern their use and won’t be violated under her watch.
“Italy remains a sovereign nation,” she reportedly said, before telling Trump to worry about his own popularity instead.
It’s a rare public flashpoint between two leaders usually seen as ideological allies.
