Pope Leo has defended his calls for peace amid sharp personal and political attacks from President Trump regarding the conflict in Iran.
Tensions have escalated between the White House and the Holy See over the conflict in the Middle East. President Trump recently claimed the Pope “thinks it’s fine for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” a statement the Vatican denies. Despite the barbs, Pope Leo remains steadfast. “The mission of the Church is to preach the Gospel, to preach peace,” he stated, adding, “If someone wants to criticise me for preaching the Gospel… I hope simply to be listened to.”
While Trump labeled the first U.S.-born pontiff “WEAK on crime” and “terrible for Foreign Policy,” diplomats are working to prevent a permanent “deep rift.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio is currently visiting the Vatican to discuss mutual interests. Meanwhile, the Pope continues his plea: “As a pastor, I cannot be in favour of war.”
