Nigerian man Olaolukitan Abel found dead in police custody after opening fire, killing residents in Atlanta

The 26-year-old suspect in a random Atlanta shooting spree, Olaolukitan Abel, was found dead in his DeKalb County jail cell on Tuesday, with officials stating there are currently no signs of foul play.

Olaolukitan Abel, a 26-year-old Nigerian national arrested for a deadly shooting spree in Atlanta, was found dead in his cell at the DeKalb County Jail on Tuesday evening. According to a statement from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, detention staff discovered Abel unresponsive at approximately 6:48 p.m. Despite resuscitation efforts by jail personnel, he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Authorities have stated that there is currently “no indication of criminal activity or foul play” surrounding the death. However, the exact cause of death remains unknown and has not yet been ascertained by the medical examiner. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a full investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances leading to the young man’s passing while in custody.

Abel had been held on charges related to a series of random shootings across Brookhaven and DeKalb County that left two women dead and a man critically injured. The shootings had rattled the local community, leading to his arrest and subsequent detention. Officials have pledged to inform the public once the results of the investigation and autopsy are finalized
