Ousted South Korean president gets 30 years in prison over drone incursion linked to martial law

Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after a court found him guilty of charges linked to a military drone incursion over North Korea.

According to New York Post, judges ruled that Yoon conspired in the October 2024 operation, which prosecutors said helped create a pretext for his failed martial law declaration later that year.

The ruling marks another dramatic chapter in South Korea’s political turmoil. Yoon, who was removed from office after his impeachment was upheld, denied wrongdoing and argued the drone mission was unrelated to martial law. Already serving a life sentence in a separate insurrection case, the former leader plans to appeal the latest conviction. The verdict further strengthens the legacy of one of the country’s most controversial political crises.
