The lawyer who helped defend Ken Paxton during his impeachment trial has endorsed Democrat James Talarico in Texas’ closely watched Senate race.
A key lawyer who once stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton during his impeachment battle has now thrown his support behind Paxton’s Democratic opponent, James Talarico, in one of America’s most closely watched Senate races.
As NOTUS reports, Houston attorney Dan Cogdell, who helped lead Paxton’s defense during his 2023 impeachment trial and represented him in a long-running securities fraud case, announced that he is backing Talarico for the U.S. Senate. Cogdell said Paxton has “lost sight of his core mission” of serving Texans and praised Talarico’s message of unity.
The endorsement is turning heads because Cogdell was one of the most prominent figures behind Paxton’s successful impeachment defense. His decision to switch sides provides a surprising boost for Talarico as Democrats attempt to make the Texas Senate race more competitive.
As the source of the news reports, Cogdell believes Talarico can attract not only Democrats but also independents and Republicans seeking a less divisive political approach. Paxton’s camp, however, has brushed off the endorsement, arguing that it changes little about the race.
With election season heating up, this unexpected endorsement has added a fresh layer of drama to an already high-stakes Texas showdown.
