The Euphrates River, cited in Biblical end-times prophecy, is dropping to record low water levels, with Iraq warning it could completely dry up by 2040 amid climate change and groundwater depletion.
The Euphrates River is drying up at an alarming rate, reigniting fears among believers that a Biblical end-times prophecy is unfolding, according to the Daily Star.
Iraq’s Ministry of Water Resources has warned the river could completely dry up by 2040, with water levels already at record lows according to the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.
The development has alarmed end-times believers who point to Revelation 16:12, which warns that the Euphrates drying up would signal the advance of eastern armies towards the Battle of Armageddon.
A 2013 NASA report found the Tigris and Euphrates basins lost 117 million acre feet of freshwater between 2003 and 2009, with 60 per cent attributed to groundwater extraction.
Climate activist Naseer Baqar warned: “Diarrhea, chicken pox, measles, typhoid fever, and cholera are currently spreading across Iraq because of the water crisis.”
