Sam Neill, the actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in “Jurassic Park,” has died at age 78, his family announced Monday.

Sam Neill has died. He was 78.

The actor’s official social media account confirmed the news Monday, according to ABC News, saying he was “surrounded by family” and passed “with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.” The statement called his death “sudden and unexpected” but noted he remained cancer-free at the time.

Neill rose to global fame as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant across the “Jurassic Park” franchise, and later starred in “Peaky Blinders,” “The Tudors,” and “Merlin.” He battled blood cancer in recent years, detailed in his 2023 memoir.

The family thanked staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney and asked for privacy.
