The US Senate has confirmed Jay Clayton as director of national intelligence in a 51-47 vote, replacing Tulsi Gabbard.

The US Senate confirmed Jay Clayton, President Donald Trump’s nominee, as director of national intelligence on Tuesday in a 51-47 vote, TRT World reports, filling the post left vacant after Tulsi Gabbard’s resignation.

Clayton, a US attorney with limited intelligence experience, will oversee 18 agencies and the president’s daily briefing.

Democrats initially favoured him over acting DNI Bill Pulte but soured after Clayton repeatedly dodged questions on Biden’s 2020 win, only saying Biden was “certified.” Senator Chuck Schumer called the hearing “abysmal,” while Republicans praised his SEC and prosecutorial record. Trump hailed Clayton as “outstanding in every way.”
