Serena Williams’ fairytale Wimbledon comeback hit a wall on Tuesday, as Australia’s Maya Joint stunned the American legend 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 in a gripping first-round clash, Channels Television reports.
Playing her first singles match in four years, the 44-year-old lit up Centre Court with vintage brilliance, saving two match points to force a decider. But 20-year-old Joint held firm to claim the biggest win of her young career.
Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, returned from retirement this month on a wildcard entry. She continues at the tournament in doubles alongside sister Venus. Per Channels Television, Williams said she relished the chance to return and soak in the All England Club atmosphere.
