The WHO has confirmed six hantavirus cases and three deaths linked to a Spain-bound cruise ship, with health authorities monitoring passengers and crew.
The World Health Organization on Friday confirmed six cases of Andes virus-linked hantavirus connected to a Spain-bound cruise ship, with two additional probable infections reported.
According to the WHO, eight people fell ill during the outbreak and three died. The vessel carried 147 passengers and crew when the outbreak was reported on May 2, while 34 others had already disembarked.
Four patients remain hospitalised in South Africa, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The WHO said the first infected person may have contracted the virus before boarding during travel in Argentina and Chile, with later transmission likely occurring aboard the ship.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it was monitoring the situation and preparing to evacuate American passengers on a government medical repatriation flight.
