Trump arrives in Beijing for high-stakes summit with Xi

US President Donald Trump has arrived in Beijing for a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with trade, Taiwan, artificial intelligence and the Iran war topping the agenda.

According to Al Jazeera, US President Donald Trump has arrived in Beijing for a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping — his first visit to China since 2017. The two-day talks, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, are expected to centre on trade tariffs, Taiwan, semiconductors, rare earth exports and the ongoing Iran war.

Trump has signalled trade will be the primary focus, telling reporters he would have “a long talk” about Iran with Xi. Washington wants China to pressure Tehran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while Beijing seeks eased semiconductor restrictions.

Salvador Santino Regilme of Leiden University warned: “The deeper conflict concerns hierarchy, legitimacy and the future architecture of global order,” adding that “both remain tied to a structure of mutual dependence that neither can easily dismantle without hurting itself.”

Analysts say a comprehensive deal remains unlikely.
