A federal magistrate judge has ruled that President Trump must disclose detailed financial records tied to his defamation lawsuit against the BBC.

A federal magistrate judge ruled Tuesday that President Trump must disclose detailed financial information tied to his defamation lawsuit against the BBC, opening the door for the network to probe more than 400 companies owned by a Trump family trust.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett said Trump’s complaint put his businesses’ reputational and economic damages at issue, per Politico. Trump’s lawyers had tried to narrow the case to reputational harm alone, dropping claims of business injury from a 2024 BBC documentary that edited his Jan. 6 speech. Lett said she couldn’t drop those allegations from the complaint anyway.
BBC attorney Chuck Tobin argued Trump “cannot separate the man and his reputation from his operation of his businesses.” The network is also pushing for Trump’s deposition, which it says his team has been slow-walking.
Trump can appeal the ruling to Judge Roy Altman.
