Trump warns Taiwan against declaring independence after Xi talks

US President Donald Trump warned Taiwan against declaring independence after talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

US President Donald Trump has warned Taiwan against formally declaring independence from China following talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing.

“I’m not looking to have somebody go independent,” Trump told Fox News after the two-day summit, adding that Washington was not seeking conflict with China over Taiwan.

Trump said he and Xi discussed Taiwan extensively, describing it as “the most important issue in China-US relations.”

Xi warned that mishandling the issue could cause the two nations to “collide or even come into conflict,” according to Chinese state media.

The US president also said he had not decided whether to approve an $11bn arms sale package for Taiwan.

Taiwanese officials said US arms sales remain vital for regional peace and stability.
