A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Peru’s Junín region on Saturday, rattling communities across the area, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
The quake occurred at a depth of about 22 kilometres, Reuters reported. Peru’s Geophysical Institute, however, measured the same tremor at magnitude 5.1, placing its epicentre roughly seven kilometres south of Chupaca at a depth of 24 kilometres. The differing readings reflect separate assessments by the two seismic monitoring agencies, each using its own methods to calculate the quake’s strength and location.
Peru sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active zones, where constant tectonic plate movement makes earthquakes a regular occurrence across the country.
