U.S. Navy shoots down Iranian drone near aircraft carrier amid rising tensions

The U.S. military shot down an Iranian drone near an aircraft carrier as maritime confrontations and diplomatic pressure heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

A U.S. Navy fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone that approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, U.S. Central Command said Tuesday. The drone “aggressively approached” the ship with “unclear intent,” despite “de-escalatory measures taken by U.S. forces operating in international waters,” spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins said.

The incident came hours after Iranian forces harassed a U.S.-flagged merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump said, “We have talks going on with Iran,” adding, “I’d like to see a deal negotiated,” but warned that failure to reach one could mean “probably bad things would happen.”
