UAE bars under-15s from social media

The UAE has banned social media for children under 15, following Australia, Britain and Canada in a growing global push to shield kids from online harm.

The UAE just drew a hard line in the sand: no more social media for anyone under 15. Per a cabinet resolution reported by state news agency WAM, platforms now have 12 months to identify and disable underage accounts — or face being blocked entirely, reports Punch.

Kids aged 15-16 get limited access with “enhanced protective measures,” but full features like commenting, sharing and group chats stay off-limits. Parents can’t opt their kids out of the rules either — consent doesn’t count as an exemption.

It’s the first such ban in the Arab world, joining Australia, the UK and others.
