UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has been appointed as the United Kingdom’s Governor to the World Bank, taking over from Yvette Cooper as part of a broader cabinet reshuffle following Keir Starmer’s resignation.
UK Names Foreign Secretary as World Bank Governor
The UK is putting its foreign secretary front and centre on global development. According to Punch, Ed Miliband will now serve as the United Kingdom’s Governor to the World Bank, personally leading Britain’s engagement on international development and climate finance.
The appointment, announced by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, means Miliband will attend the World Bank’s Annual Meetings in Bangkok come October. He replaces Yvette Cooper following a cabinet reshuffle after Keir Starmer’s resignation, which saw Andy Burnham become the new UK Prime Minister.
The move pairs with Kirsty McNeill’s appointment as Minister for Development, who will oversee four Regional Development Banks. World Bank President Ajay Banga welcomed the appointment, calling the UK a longstanding development partner.
