UK Athletics has been fined £350,000 and ordered to pay additional costs after being found responsible for the death of Paralympian shot-putter Abdullah Hayayei, who died when a throwing cage collapsed during training in 2017.
According to Punch Newspapers, the Old Bailey ruled that the incident, described by the judge as “tragic, untimely and wholly avoidable,” resulted from safety failures, including improperly assembled equipment.
The athlete, who was preparing for the World Athletics Championships, suffered fatal head injuries when a metal structure gave way. The court also noted repeated safety lapses involving the same equipment. Officials acknowledged the governing body’s financial position while granting time for payment. The ruling concludes a near decade-long legal battle over the fatal accident.
