The US Navy has tested advanced technologies, including 3D-printed helicopter parts and self-repair systems for aircraft carriers, during the RIMPAC naval exercise.
The US Navy is testing advanced technologies that could allow aircraft carriers to manufacture replacement parts at sea and reduce delays during military operations. The trials took place during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, the world’s largest international maritime training event involving about 30 ships, 30,000 personnel and more than two dozen countries.
Among the technologies showcased were 3D printers capable of producing helicopter components and water filtration parts onboard ships. The exercise also tested unmanned surface vessels delivering supplies and explored systems designed to improve ship resilience and speed up battlefield repairs. Officials said real-world testing revealed valuable lessons, including adjustments needed to keep metal printers functioning accurately aboard moving carriers.
The Daily Wire reported that the technologies are being developed through FLEETWERX, an innovation hub linking the US Navy with industry and academic partners to accelerate the adoption of new military capabilities.
