Zelensky calls for direct talks with Putin in open letter

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has renewed his push for peace, proposing a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a public letter aimed at ending the war.

According to the BBC, Zelensky said it would be “wrong to simply wait” for global attention to return to the conflict and argued that lasting peace can only come through direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow. He also called for a full ceasefire during any negotiations.

The Kremlin confirmed receiving the letter, while Putin said he was willing to reach an agreement but insisted Ukraine must make compromises, including territorial concessions Kyiv has repeatedly rejected.

US President Donald Trump welcomed the idea, saying it would be “great” if the two leaders met. Despite the diplomatic overture, major differences remain, leaving hopes for a breakthrough uncertain.
