UK moves to bar under-16s from social media platforms

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a sweeping ban on social media access for under-16s, making the UK one of the world’s toughest enforcers of children’s online safety.

Britain is done playing nice with Big Tech — and children’s social media access is now in the crosshairs.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that the UK will ban under-16s from platforms like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram, CNN reports. Restrictions on gaming and livestreaming services that allow children to interact with strangers are also on the table.

“It is clear to me a full ban is the right choice,” Starmer declared, promising safer, happier children with more freedom to simply grow up.

The government already holds powers to begin implementing the ban, with full regulation expected by year-end and a complete prohibition in place by next spring — following Australia, which made history with a similar ban last December.
