Iran declares Strait of Hormuz closed, citing ceasefire violations by Israel

Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz and warned ships to stay away, accusing Israel of violating a fragile ceasefire with fresh strikes in southern Lebanon.

Iran says it has closed the Strait of Hormuz, ramping up tensions after accusing Israel of breaching a shaky ceasefire with continued strikes in southern Lebanon.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy warned vessels to steer clear of the strategic waterway, saying their safety couldn’t be guaranteed. Iranian officials called the move a first response to what they describe as broken commitments by the U.S. and Israel.

Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President JD Vance touched down in Switzerland for talks aimed at advancing Iran’s nuclear negotiations and the Lebanon truce, with mediators from Qatar and Pakistan also at the table.

But the diplomacy hasn’t stopped the bloodshed — Israeli strikes reportedly killed at least 16 people overnight in Lebanon, fuelling fears the fragile deal could collapse entirely, according to NBC News.
