Allies say Sir Keir Starmer is increasingly expected to step down as Prime Minister after a collapse in support among Labour MPs, with Andy Burnham seen as the frontrunner to replace him.
Sir Keir Starmer is increasingly expected to step down as Prime Minister after a dramatic collapse in support among Labour MPs and Cabinet ministers, allies and government sources say.
Multiple figures told The Telegraph that Starmer is reflecting on his future following Andy Burnham’s Makerfield by-election win. Some supporters now believe an announcement could come within days.
Burnham’s camp claims he has backing from nearly 300 MPs, raising hopes of an uncontested path to the Labour leadership. Senior Cabinet ministers are reportedly pushing Starmer to set out a timetable for an orderly handover rather than fight a contest.
Downing Street, however, insists the PM still plans to stay put and fight any challenge, with policy announcements lined up next week as he weighs his options at Chequers, according to The Telegraph.
