Serena Williams to make Wimbledon singles comeback at 44

Serena Williams is heading back to Centre Court.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion has accepted a wild card invitation for the 2026 ladies’ singles draw, marking a stunning return to Grand Slam singles competition at the age of 44.

The All England Club confirmed the news on Sunday, just days after Williams made her long-awaited return to professional tennis in doubles following nearly four years away from the tour.

The move means Serena will compete in both singles and doubles at Wimbledon, having already accepted a doubles wild card alongside her sister, Venus Williams. The iconic duo, who have collected six Wimbledon doubles titles together, are set to reunite once again on one of tennis’ biggest stages.

Williams has not played a singles match since her third-round defeat to Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 US Open. At the time, she famously avoided using the word “retirement,” saying she was instead “evolving” away from tennis.

Now, nearly four years later, one of the greatest players in history is back.

Serena owns 23 Grand Slam singles titles, second only to Margaret Court on the all-time list, with seven of those crowns coming at Wimbledon.

The 2026 Championships begin on June 29, and all eyes will be on the returning legend.
