Tensions in the Middle East flared again after US President Donald Trump ordered fresh strikes on Iranian military targets, accusing Tehran of breaching a recently agreed ceasefire.
The latest escalation followed a drone attack on a commercial cargo vessel travelling through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical shipping routes. US Central Command said the operation targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, along with coastal radar sites, describing the action as a direct response to what Washington called a ceasefire violation.
Trump condemned the incident, calling it a “foolish violation” of the agreement reached just days earlier. Reports indicated that one drone struck the vessel, causing damage but no casualties, while additional drones were intercepted before reaching their target.
According to CNBC and the Express, the strikes marked the first major US military response since the ceasefire framework was announced. Vice President JD Vance reinforced the administration’s position, warning that “violence will be met with violence” if attacks continue.
The Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of the dispute. Iran has repeatedly insisted on controlling shipping movements through the strategic waterway, while Washington maintains that international vessels must be allowed free passage. The confrontation briefly disrupted maritime traffic and raised fresh concerns about global energy supplies.
Despite the military action, diplomatic efforts have not completely collapsed. US and Iranian officials are reportedly maintaining communication channels aimed at preventing a broader conflict. Analysts say the coming days will determine whether the latest exchange remains a limited confrontation or develops into a wider regional crisis.
The developments were reported by Express and CNBC.
